Jim Carrey has opened up about why he made a U turn on the announcement that he was going to retire in 2022, and it may be down to his new financial situation.
Carrey, 62, has been a comedy staple for many years, having starred in flicks such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show and The Mask.
His catalogue of films ensured that he’d rack up a great deal of wealth, amounting to $300 million, which is more than enough to lead a cushty lifestyle.
But he began to slow down his work before making a shock announcement.
The actor starred in only seven major projects from 2015-2022, before confirming that he was retiring.
In fact, Sonic the Hedgehog was his first role in a major studio film since his role in Dumb and Dumber To in 2014.

After reprising his role as Dr Robotnik, he said in 2022 to Access Hollywood during the press tour: “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.”
He added: “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.
“I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like —and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough.
“I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
But amazingly, he’s admitted that just two years after stating his intentions to leave the industry that he’s planning on picking up another Sonic film.
Once again, he is set to star in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, alongside Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, Ben Schwartz, Krysten Ritter, and James Marsden.
As for why Carrey has done a major U turn, particularly as he claimed he would only return for a script written in gold ink, he said: “That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah.
“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
Carrey quickly added: “At the same time, it had heart, and that’s why I did it the first time. There was something beautiful about the heart of the piece.”

Unfortunately, it appears that Carrey’s current financial situation is lending its hand to his choice to come out of retirement.
Having bought ‘a lot of stuff’, perhaps his fortune was slowly purged and now he needs to work again to live comfortably.
According to Realtor.com, he’s still waiting for a pay out for selling his Los Angeles mansion, which has seen continuous price slashes as he tries to sell it.
It was listed in February 2023 for $28.9 million, but over a year and a half later, it’s whittled down to $19 million.
When he first listed his home for sale, he told The New York Post that he was looking forward to a change.
He said: “For three decades it’s been a sanctuary for me, but I don’t spend a lot of time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it like I have.”
It has been reported that he enjoys traveling and living in other locations where he has homes, such as in Maui.
These are expenses which could have contributed to him losing his wealth.
Hopefully his new film allows him to retire in peace.

A Jim Carrey lookalike has been forced to respond to her followers after they have been coming up with ‘conspiracy theories’ ahead of the actor’s birthday.
Now, lookalikes and doppelgangers are something that seem to entertain the masses – the fact that two people may look eerily alike despite having no relation can be incredibly fascinating.
But some people take it too far and start to theorise about doppelgangers actually being the same person, especially when it comes to a celebrity doppelganger.
Well, these conspiracy theorists have locked on to their latest target in recent days, letting her know that she looks just like Jim Carrey by sending her numerous photos of the comedian in the lead up to his birthday – which falls on 17 January.
And she has responded to these claims about their resemblance by uploading a TikTok video.

“Well, this past week, I have gotten a bunch of DMs, messages, and texts about this photo,” the lookalike, named Heather Shaw, said.
“To that, I say thank you. If you sent me a photo of Jim Carrey with long hair, thanks so much.”
Shaw, a comedian from New York who performs her own stand-up shows and is already well known on social media for her uncanny resemblance to the actor, continued: “You know, did I need it in my life? Probably not. If I wanted to know what Jim Carrey looked like with long hair, I would just look in the mirror.
“Do you know what I mean?”
She went on: “Some people who sent me this photo are conspiracy theorists who are definitely not on their meds.
“They’re pulling a real Kanye, they’re saying things like ‘This is him talking to you’, ‘This is his way to get through’.”

Despite her apparent annoyance at the situation, she has managed to make a joke out of it and cannot deny the striking similarities in looks that she shares with Carrey.
She finishes the video with a joke about if they were to meet: “Other people have said, ‘have you and Jim met yet?’ It’s like no, we can’t meet, the world will implode if we meet.
“If our faces go together like this, the world explodes. So you’re welcome, I’m saving you.”
Shaw has a big following of her own anyway though, boasting two and a half million followers on TikTok, with that particularly video already having over 160k likes on the social media app.

Jim Carrey is arguably one of the biggest actors to ever grace Hollywood, but there’s one film he was initially paid nothing to appear in.
I think it’s quite obvious the 62-year-old isn’t short of a few quid having starred in his fair share of blockbuster movies over the years.
From Dumb & Dumber and Batman Forever to The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carrey’s resume is pretty impressive.
And according to Celebrity Net Worth, he is worth a whopping $180 million.

However, there was one movie the actor was not paid a penny to star in initially, and it’s one of the actor’s lesser known films.
Yes Man, a 2008 comedy directed by Peyton Reed, tells the story of a man named Carl who simply decides that he says ‘no’ a little too often.
I mean, we all have those ‘f**k it’ moments, but Carl resolves to saying ‘yes’ to absolutely everything, leading to a set of hilarious but unfortunate events.
While the flick had a budget of $70 million, Warner Bros. did not have to pay for Carrey’s salary out of that sum.
Instead, the actor apparently decided to do something a little different when it came to his wages on the 2000s film.
Carrey is said to have taken a 36.2 percent stake in the whole profit of the movie.
The move was seen as a bit of a risk as Yes Man could have flopped big time, leaving Carrey with a small reward for all his efforts.
But in the end, it is reported the actor made anywhere between $35 million and $50 million as the comedy was a box office success, raking in $223 million worldwide.
While Carrey seemingly enjoyed working on Yes Man, there is one film he regrets making.

There wasn’t anything wrong with the movie as such, rather Kiss-Ass 2 launched during a sensitive time.
Carrey filmed the movie a month before the Sandy Hook Massacre, a national tragedy that saw a gunman shoot and kill 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, US.
Taking to X back in June 2013, Carrey said: “I did Kick-Ass a month before Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence.
“I meant to say my apologies to others involve [sic] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

Jim Carrey was once given the terrifying news that he had just ‘10 minutes to live’ – not what anyone wants to hear, really, is it?
The Ace Ventura star appeared on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he was promoting his autobiographical novel Memoirs and Misinformation, when he shared the shocking story.
The 62-year-old Canadian actor was questioned about the cover of his book, which is an image of his face.
Asked about what the cover art meant, he admitted that the snap was actually taken just moments after he was given the rather terrifying news that he had mere minutes left to live.
Opening up about the incident, Carrey said he was writing on the book on an island in Hawaii when his assistant called him in tears to tell him they had ‘ten minutes left’ and the ‘missiles are coming’.
He said: “The cover is actually my face after being told I have 10 minutes to live. It was completely real to us.”

Understandably quite frantic at this point, Carrey initially began to think up ways to get off the island as quickly as possible before eventually coming to terms with his fate and started to say his goodbyes to his nearest and dearest.
He went on: “At that point I started going, ‘OK what can I do with this last moment of time’. I just decided to go through a list of gratitudes and honest to God I just could not stop thinking of wonderful things that have happened to me and blessings I’ve had.
“It was lovely. And I got to a point of grace at about two minutes to spare when I found out it wasn’t actually happening.

“All I was planning to do was close my eyes and be thankful because it’s been a good ride.”
Obviously, Carrey didn’t die as it transpired that the whole thing was a false alarm and he was never in any real danger. Phew.
The alert, which was was sent in error on 13 January 2018, told residents to take shelter from an incoming missile. The message warned: “This is not a drill.”
Authorities later said there had been a miscommunication during an exercise at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.
Joking about what he did after finding out it was a mistake, Carrey said: “I got p***ed off and heads rolled.”

Jim Carrey once got so angry on a film set that the director thought he was about to ‘punch him in the face’.
One of Hollywood’s finest was the star of an Oscar-winning movie alongside the likes of Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood.
The Michel Gondry-led film, written by Charlie Kaufman, follows the story of Clementine (Winslet) who undergoes a dangerous procedure to erase the painful memories of her ex-boyfriend Joel (Carrey) from her mind.
When Joel finds out that his former girlfriend is going through with the procedure, he decides to undergo the same surgery and slowly forgets the woman that he once loved.
If you’ve still not seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), you can check out the trailer below:
The flick won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay while Winslet also received a Best Actress nomination for her performance.
What made the film special was Gondry’s decision to minimise the use of CGI for more practical special effects.
For instance, when Winslet’s character was filmed popping up in different rooms, the director thought of the idea to install trick doors so the actor could quickly run between each room, as reported by Variety.
However, this technique didn’t always materialise on set.
For one scene, both Carrey and Winslet visit Joel’s babyhood memory of being bathed in the sink.

The acting duo were then told to sit in a giant tub for several hours.
Winslet actually fainted on set and her co-lead was left fuming by the decision to stay in the tub for so long.
“People’s nerves get frayed,” Carrey told the outlet in 2019.
“Michel was going, ‘Shoot, shoot!’ and she was going, ‘I’m nauseous’.
“And I got angry because she was not feeling well. So yeah, Michel and I had words.”
Gondry also explained how he thought the actor was leaning towards a fist fight.
The director asked Carrey: “Are you going to punch me in the face?”

This was seemingly not the last time the pair had a disagreement on set.
“One of the last times Jim yelled at me, I started to yell back and said ‘Jim, if you yell at me, I don’t like you anymore. And if I don’t like you, I can’t direct you’,” Gondry said.
After filming had finished Carrey joked: “Michel and I had a fist fight in the street.”
15 years on, the pair reunited in 2018 for the Showtime series Kidding, which was cancelled after two seasons in 2020.
